Singapore cuts down on Obesity with Stair Climbing

Obesity is a common problem that affects all countries worldwide, but people from some countries are more exposed to this epidemic than others. Not only the United States of America, but also Singapore and other countries from the Southeast Asia are dealing with an increasing number of obese people. The connection between obesity and various life-threatening diseases is not a secret to anybody, as obese people are more likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other similar conditions throughout the course of their lives. This is precisely why some governments have decided to take radical measures to help their people overcome this epidemic.

While in some countries, people are stimulated and helped to lose weight through different modern methods and techniques, in some countries such as Singapore they are encouraged to shed pounds the natural, healthy and traditional way: by climbing stairs. Something as simple as climbing stairs rather than taking the elevator can help you burn tens, if not hundreds of calories on a daily basis. One of the many benefits of stair climbing for cutting down calories, in addition to being very pleasant and entertaining, is also the fact that this has no side-effects whatsoever, and the results are almost guaranteed.

Singapore is not the only Southeast Asian country that has implemented an anti-obesity program, as other countries from the same region such as Malaysia or the Kingdom of Thailand have done the same thing â€" however, what makes Singapore stand out from the rest is its rather unique approach to the problem.

In addition to this innovative stair climbing strategy that seems to be very much appreciated, Singapore has also tried different other anti-obesity programs and alternatives, including replacing fatty and unhealthy meals with other low-calorie alternatives such as brown rice. One of the most important aspects that all those who are trying to lose weight must understand is the fact that exercising alone will not do them much good â€" best case scenario, it will help them maintain a stable weight, but weight loss only occurs when they combine regular physical exercises with a balanced and nutrient-rich diet.

Perhaps one of the most appreciated models when it comes to weight loss is Sean Chin, a popular fitness trainer from the country of Singapore who managed to switch from a 24% body fat to as low as 9% by relying solely on physical exercises and good nutrition. His healthy eating combined with an active lifestyle have inspired thousands of other people in the country to take measures for preventing obesity.

As Sean Chin himself says, one of the most important “ingredients” for a successful weight loss program is to actually help the participants build up self-confidence, and to help them stay motivated and determined. One of the most efficient ways to do that is by showing them pictures of other people who have managed to lose weight by climbing stairs and switching to a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Zee Yoong Kang, the chief executive of the Health Promotion Board based in Singapore, said that obesity prevention programs are a top priority for the Singapore government at the moment, and that they are very determined to prevent and address obesity before it gets to become the norm asimongst the population, and become a daily part of people’s lifestyle.

Different countries have different approaches when it comes to treating and preventing obesity amongst the population, and while some countries have invested massively in anti-obesity programs, others such as Malaysia are relying on programs designed to increase the public awareness about obesity and all the health risks in involves. The best treatment for obesity â€" and for all dangerous diseases, for that matter â€" is to prevent it before even having the chance to treat it. Obesity has become a worldwide problem lately, and although it is more commonly seen in the Western countries, it has slowly started to be noticed in the Eastern and Asian countries as well. For this reason, governments have come up with different prevention programs that they are very determined to implement.
