Ayran â" a Refreshing Turkish Yogurt Drink
When I visited Turkey, I was intrigued by the big pots of frothy, foamy yogurt that I saw everywhere. When I first tasted this refreshing, salty drink, I fell in love right away. And I think thatâs because it reminded me of the Indian chaas â" a cold, spiced buttermilk drink that I grew up with. Think of this as a mint and yogurt smoothie. Only, it is salty instead of sweet!
Ayran is the perfect answer to a hot summer day. Itâs a cold, refreshing drink with a foamy head. The vendors I saw in Turkey sold ayran with a thick foamy, frothy head. They achieved this froth by using a machine. In my recipe, I use a few ice cubes; this helps to create the foam.
The mint in this recipe is totally optional. But I always use the mint because I love a cold, minty Ayran.
